Editor’s Experiences with The Hmong RPA
The past 40 years, he had worked with the Hmong RPA in various levels: personal ambition, teaching classes in middle and high schools, developing primary teaching books, and was in the Hmong literacy committee in Minneapolis Public Schools.
During his teaching years, he taught spelling, reading, poem and essay. The most challenge issue was the teaching of Hmong grammar because Hmong grammar was not developed. Therefore, there was no vocabulary for it. To get through this, he had to create new words and to use some English words. To help his students in writing, he and his co-worker developed a booklet that was titled A Guide To Hmong Writing.
In the Hmong literacy committee, he helped expanding Hmong counting numbers, developing vocabulary for some geometrical shapes, creating some new Hmong words, and developing Hmong days of the week. The team also tried to simplified the Hmong consonants, added new consonants and a new vowel. Once the team proposed to use the simplified consonants in a primary teaching book, but there was an opposition. As a result, the book was printed with the original consonants. But that dream of simplified consonants is not dead and the creation of this website will help the Hmong to accept new ideas and new creations which will expand our Hmong language.
